Description
The present volume reproduces the musical text of volume 6, series 6 of the Beethoven Complete Edition (Munich and Duisburg, 1965). All of Beethoven’s chamber music for two and three string instruments originated before 1798, and thus prior to the op. 18 cycle of string quartets, which bring together in a masterly fashion, and for the first time, all the compositional devices explored in his quartet style. Thereafter almost all of Beethoven’s chamber music for strings is found in this genre, which became central to his musical œuvre. In light of his artistic evolution and musical output, his trios thus seem to be preliminary stages en route to the quartets. However, it should not be forgotten that, in both quantity and quality, Beethoven’s music for string trio forms the most significant body of works in this entire genre.
