These performances represent my playing at various points in my life. The collection is a good representation of what I had to offer at the time of each recording: me at 25, me at 30, me at 40. I ve always tried to keep my repertoire fresh and to continue evolving musically as an artist. Sometimes when I listen to them, I say to myself: Well, thats pretty good, you know, but I wouldnt do it like that now. Today I might paint it with a different shade or color. It might have a different feel to it. If people ask, Well, how is it different?, my answer would be: I cant tell you, its just different. Its like driving a car from point A to point B, but instead of taking one street you take a couple of others. You still arrive at the same place, but you ve gone a different way.
The fact that these and all my other DG and Decca recordings are now being reissued in one box is amazing to me. I m so flattered. The recording industry is very different today talk about evolving! So its especially nice to have a collection thats representative of what Ive done throughout the years. - Itzhak Perlman, from an interview with Richard Evidon
