Mozart wrote his piano quartets in the years 1785 and 1786. The g-minor Quartet is dated 16 d’ottobre 1785 in the autograph manuscript, while the Eb-major work is entered in Mozart’s own autograph catalogue for 1786 under the 3rd of June. Mozart is said to have reached an agreement with the Viennese publisher F. A. Hoffmeister to publish several piano quartets. However, no sooner had the g-minor Quartet appeared in December 1785 than Hoffmeister apparently complained that the public was unwilling to buy this kind of music. At this point, Mozart declined to fulfill the terms of the contract. In the event, the Eb-major Quartet was not issued by Hoffmeister but by Artaria (1787), even though it had been engraved at Hoffmeister’s engraving office.
