The Fantasia in f minor ranks among Schubert’s most prominent piano duets. It dates from the beginning of 1828 and underwent publication by Diabelli, Vienna, in March 1829 (plate no. 3158). This first edition appears to have been commissioned by Schubert himself, since the autograph prepared from a draft is already furnished with the opus number 103 in the composer’s own hand. The dedication to Countess Karoline Esterhazy de Galantha is, however, to be found in the first edition only.
